Liberty Alliance’s Dream Come True

Remember the early days of Identity Management, Liberty Alliance vs Microsoft’s Passport. Lot’s of effort has gone into formulating a flexible and secure ID exchange protocol.  Although, what do you hear about that today. Liberty Alliance has been retired and was picked up by Kantara Initiative. There are still major efforts being deployed for internal ID Management typically utilized for single sign on and collaboration activities across domains. But what was the overriding goal. It was that we would have a way to use our Identity Account to gain access to many trusted web sites without having to validate it each time. It would be validated by a trusted third party.

Wow, who could have guessed that Facebook Connect and Twitter would become that trusted authority. Apple’s announcement of their integration of Twitter into iOS 5 today and the availability of API’s for developers seals the deal. Facebook and Twitter are the global clearinghouse for our identities. Be careful.
